*I had a Birthday on Thursday...
but by the time everyone was home to celebrate it with me, instead of looking like this:

So not fair! I got food poisoning on my birthday!

So in case you have been waiting for something from me, I may have been detained by the porcelain god and am trying to catch up this week from the couple days lost.

*I got to have a birthday date after all. Just my babe and I.
{my mom took the kids all day on Sunday for us!}

We went into DC and tried out this new place called the Shop House. It was totally my thing. And it was really good. I want to go back. Today.

There were people celebrating Chinese New year in DC this weekend so I got to see a bunch of happy children leaving with flags and drums and fire crackers. Happy. We scored to amazing parking spots.
{in Washington, DC that's hard to do!}

Then we spent a couple hours wandering around the Smithsonian Museum. That was relaxing....

and on the way home we stopped to get iceberry.

In case you didn't know I love tart frozen yogurt. It's my favorite. Yum.

My mom gave me a bunch of goodies from West Elm.

Isn't that a happy counter?

SO, don't feel too bad for me. I had a good birthday after all.

It just was a few days late ;)

the reason why I like my age

Fact: I just had to use a calculator to make sure I knew how old I was actually turning.
This has been the phenomenon for a while now.
I think I started to forget how old I was when I started to count how old my babes are.
I know, I am a woman, so I should lie about my age.
But, honestly at this point I am actually cool with it.
I had more of a major freak out last month when my first born turned 13.

Let me tell you why.
I am who I am. I accept that.
10 years ago I was constantly questioning myself and what I was doing.
10 years ago I was more worried about pleasing others.
I follow my heart. I trust my gut.

I don't play anymore reindeer games.
When I was younger I took too much to heart at what other people thought.
I am such a crazy sensitive soul. I have gotten really good at hiding it.
So things do still hurt my feelings, but I am not sweating the small stuff.
I have better and more important things to worry about.

I have come to terms with my body.
(I can see all the times I wished I was skinnier and felt inadequate because I wasn't the skinny girl, and now when I look back at pictures I wonder why I did that to myself)
I have had babies. I have seen my body go through crazy things.
I am still standing. I will never be the skinny girl.
I have boobs and hips that are just part of my making.
That doesn't mean I shouldn't always take the best care of myself, or that I always do.
Maybe turning a year older does make me think about that more.
Maybe I will find a better lotion for ~~eeeek!~~ wrinkles.
I might have to start to confront those greys.
But My thinking has changed. My young self wanted to be that skinny girl.
Me now? just wants to be strong. To be able to outrun the bad guys and to feel good.
I want to be able to help my girls feel that way too. To not waste their time worrying about skinniness.

I am in a nut shell more comfortable in my skin.
I am more confident in defending myself and sticking up for what's right without feeling bad about it.
I am more confident in sticking up for others too.

I have made a lot of mistakes.
I have learned from them.
I have also done a lot of good things too.
Now that I am older I am not to shy to say that out loud. To be proud of that.
This year my age feels more like a trophy or something than bad news.
I have earned every single lesson I have learned.
Some have been painfully hard.
But here I am.

SO, tomorrow I turn 37. Not dog years. REAL Aubrey years.
I would tell all you sweet girls who are younger than me to love yourself.
I would probably hug you and tell you how wonderful you are.
TO not sweat the small stuff.
TO soak in the little stuff. Those little moments.
TO be true to you.
TO question, but not over analyze who you are.
TO not try to change others.
Just be.

Maybe in a few years I will change my mind.
But right now. 37 will be just fine with me.
I'm not old. I am only just beginning.
I've earned it.

I got these goodies in the mail last week. And I am so excited, I am about to sing you a song....

So here's a story of a lovely lady
Who was bringing up three very lovely kids.
All of them had hair of brown, like their mother,
The youngest one in curls.

Here's this store, we'll call it potterybarn,
Who was busy tempting aubrey with jewels all its own,
There were two containers, sitting there together,
Yet they were all alone.

SO this one day when the lady bought these lovelies
And she knew it was much more than a hunch,
That this project would somehow be fantastic. {and make her very happy}
But that's the way she became all confused and let them sit there for four long years...
They just sat there just a bunch.

That's the way we all ended up with this post now.
The lucky bunch!

ok, I don't know where that came from,
(can you hear the song in your head now??)
and I have never argued the fact that I am a dork.
But this little ditty has a happy ending and I am so excited, I had to share!!

SO, yes, I bought these 2 containers like four years ago from the pottery barn outlet and I was SOOOO excited to build myself 2 very fantastic terrariums. They're sort of magical, no?
I did my research and knew I needed
1)sand
2)gravel
3)charcoal
4)soil
5)plants...but what kind of plants!?

The problem was every time I went to go do this thing I could not find the things that I needed...

I could not find the right kind of plants.
I really didn't want a dead plant project. So they sat.

Then I was on etsy and this listing popped up. WHAT!? a KIT!!? FOR ME!?
I sent the shop a conversation asking a few probably very elementary questions.
Lindsey at Bluff Creek Naturals sent me a warm response and more than
answered my questions and concerns and did not make me feel elementary at all.

So I ordered 2 kits for my two lonely containers and they arrived a couple of days later.
The supplies came labeled perfectly and the instructions were so clear that even an elementary student could do it. I loved that part!

Anyway. It's been almost a week and these containers make me so happy.

And as Lindsey put it, "they're practically no maintenance! Perk!!"

So, if you are feeling a little blue and think a little green will fix that for you as you wait for spring to come, I think you should make one too. It doesn't have to be in any particular container. You could use just about anything. She even has a couple in her shop!!

Do you suffer from it too?

I think most of us girls are people pleasers.
It probably starts before we even utter our first words.
It makes us happy to make other people happy.
It feels so good to say yes.
We want to be rock stars.
We want to do all the things we say yes to.
It just feels good to accomplish it all.
To check off all those yes boxes.
yes, yes, yes.

But, oh NO....
it sort of hurts when those boxes start falling on top of you.
Like, sort of crushes you actually.

I've been getting a little crushed lately.
So I'm going to have to fix that.
I'm going to have to say no.

Some of the no's will go to my family.
Some of the nos will go to strangers.
Some will go to my friends.
Those no's are going to hurt.
Some of the no's are going to have to go to me.

Saying no sort-a sucks.
especially when you have to say it to yourself right?
no, you can not do it all- as much as you want to.
no, you can not have your cake and eat it too- well maybe a little.
no, you can not go days without any real sleep.
No, it doesn't make you any less of a person.
No, it doesn't make you a meanie pants.
It makes you A PERSON. One person.

no, it's not the end of the world.

Have you heard of Modcloth?

Oh wow. When I first heard of them, I browsed their shop for hours.

They have SO MUCH STUFF that especially when it comes to dresses, there's tons to drool over.

Quirky, vintage, mod.

BUT, you know how when you see a spot like that and you see their skinny little models, you can't help but wonder if that adorable dress would actually work in real life?

ENTER, MY GUY AND HIS SUPER SURPRISE TO ME...
Ok, so my guy earned some MEGA points over Christmas.
I would have never guessed he even knew about modcloth.
He totally and completely surprised me when he picked out not one, but THREE things from there to give me for Christmas. Like jaw dropped, floored surprise.
{Oh, and a pair of really cute socks too.}
I think he must have somehow been doing his homework.
But on this, no hints were even dropped.
SO, I being the big dork that I am, even took a picture of the box before I threw it out.
I am a completely real mama. And felt so special when I tried on my dresses.
He did a good job picking them out.
SO shall we take a look at these lovlies?

#1 this is my favorite of the three.

It is absolutely gorgeous. The little details are so feminine.

The yarn is sooooo soft.

It is very flattering for this curvy gal.

BUT, unfortunately it is also SOOO short.

And dudes, I AM SHORT.

Even Barbie might consider this one short?

So, I have not worn it yet.

BUT,because I love it so much I am going to either

a} find/make a slip to lengthen it

b} buy a pair of knit leggings.

{maybe it will still look like I am wearing tights? And maybe that is a good or bad thing?}

I am open to suggestions here!!

#2 do you see that lacy detail around the neck?

It is absolute prettiness.

truth: If you've got a decent set of girls you need to be careful about wearing a less pushed up bra

or they might peek out and say hi up there, but with that all taken care of,

it's really a nice detail to the dress.

The fabric is a nice floaty-yet sturdy weight to wear everyday.

SO far I have worn it with tights, brown boots and a sweater.

But, it is also going to be really cute this summer all on it's own.

And on this dress, the length is PERFECT.

Once again I'm open to suggestions! how would you pair it?

and last?

#3 VavavaVOOM.

This one takes no prisoners.

When I put it on, I think the Black Eyed Peas just might be singing about my humps.

The texture is really cool, and so it doesn't lay completely flat on me.

The band is really actually flattering too.

I think this dress requires a date night, so I haven't worn it yet either.

I plan on wearing it with a pair of black tights and tall black boots.

The length isn't too short, but definitely well above the knee.

If this mama can pull it off though, most mamas could too.

SO, Modcloth I am pleasantly surprised.

These are really special dresses.

I will however, be keeping my eyes peeled at the lengths of your dresses

if I am able to come back for more.

But that's okay, if I go in knowing that I might have to pair a dress with a pair of

leggings or skinny jeans I think they still work.

so, maybe someday you'll see them on me.

But not today.

I just had to tell you though.

I saw your shirt a couple of places lately and ABSOLUTELY HAD TO HAVE IT!!
I entered contests for it. I went to your website for it. But dude, you make it too hard.
The first time I jumped over to your website, you asked me to fill out your little questionnaire, so I obliged. Then, I tried to find it...but more roadblocks, so I walked away...thankyouverymuch for your little style suggestions, but I just wanted the shirt.
Fast forward.
I see it again, and again I think, "I need that shirt."
I went to your website again, tried again to just find it and buy it.
I clicked and tried and clicked and tried but just could not get to it. Oh how I tried.
I never did find it. I did not have the time to keep looking.

my sweet girl turns eleven today.
WOW. I feel like the wind has gotten knocked outta me the past week as far as birthdays go!
eleven and thirteen!? How did that happen??
The Bean has one more month of being four and then toddlers no more around here.
gosh.
Okay- so I got off track there for a minute.
Do you see this lovely machine down there?

this is what my eleven year old is getting for her birthday. I think I am just as totally excited because I love Hello Kitty!!

This machine has good reviews so I think it's going to be a fun start for her.

It's on it's way to us and I have been jotting down ideas for simple projects to teach her how to sew.
Well then, as I glanced back over my notes and doodles I thought about how many of you have said you want to learn to sew.
I was thinking how I could put together a list of cute little beginner projects and make it a happy package. Like a downloadable pdf booklet.
What do you think?

I have a to do list, or want to make list,
a inspiration list....

I have all these ideas for the shop...
but time gobbles me up.
It happens. I am whole.
I love being a mama and that I can drop everything and "snugglebuggle" at the moments need.
I not so love that I can referee a brother-sister fight and get right in the middle. But I can.
I love that after all these years of marriage, my guy still needs a night or two a week of snuggling on the couch or talking.
I am the taxi driver and meal planner.
I am the maid and the laundry goddess.
I try to be every ones cheerleader.
That usually means the inspirations I have come last.
That's ok I tell myself. I will get to them eventually.
The fact that I am all those things allows me to pursue my dreams on the side.

These past 6 months I have been so lucky to get so many custom orders.
I have fun making other people's ideas come to life...
They are what I do first when I get into the studio.
I want my peeps to be happy with their orders and not have to wait too long for me.
But that leaves little time for my ideas.

So I have been looking at my list. Here are a few of my favorite things that left the shop in 2011.
The ones on my to do list that I hope to put back in the shop this year. ready to ship.

these baby bees. the pile of beautiful scraps I have saved are just calling their names!

Oh how I loved this sweet pea purse. I have a stack of gorgeous vintage sheets to make more of her.

The brown and purple here? It was hard for me to send out this one and not keep it for myself.

the suit. I ran out of the suit fabric and have been on the look out ever since.

An absolute favorite reversible purse.

omygosh. another set I absolutely adored. I want to have more of these typewriter sets.

They are just too charming not to.

AND last-with the return of Bella in Breaking Dawn, I am re-visting my Bella bag. Because seriously, who doesn't need a little plaid in their life??

I have lots of other ideas too. Of course I do.

So keep tuned and I promise not to fail you this year.

I am not much of a resolution girl.
When I was younger I made them because I thought that's what you should do.
But, I haven't made a single resolution in the past few years and I am happier that way.
I accomplish more without feeling like I have to follow a checklist.
January is always a time of year that I do reflect over what's working and what's not.
It's the month of my birthday so I truly feel like it is a whole new year to be the best I can be,
and reevaluate where I am heading.
on this new years eve, eve-
I sat down and jotted down the first things that came to mind for what I want more or less of in 2012.
They must be what I want the most. I did it quick without thinking too much about it.

coffee, ideas
dancing, energy, trust
water, raw, quiet
friendship, kindness, music
photography, patience, dates
zumba, one on one time with my kids
sleep

frustration, control
worry, junk, drama
laundry {ok, I know that one is a stretch}

Hi-
So guess what-
I had the fabric printer send me some of my owl fabric really big so I could make some cool stuff for you guys out of them!! Like these pillows.

My little Bean is really fun to work with.
Did you know she's my top model these days?

really!? could we put the phone down? Divas!

Sometimes, just like her mama, she gets a little goofy and she's hard to reign in.

You guys usually miss out on the out takes, but today she suggested we do the "shoot" in her room.
She's pretty smart ;)

She has me smitten, so I couldn't resist sharing...
too bad you could not hear the stuff she was saying.
she completely kills me and leaves me speechless sometimes.

today, the photo shoot cost me.
She said she's keeping the brown owl.

A little Quiz for Christmas

Hi!!!!
I miss you peeps.
I have been finishing orders {I know I said I finished Friday but then I got another one and even thought I said I probably couldn't make Christmas, I am such a sucker and had to}.
I was a happy gal today making Fat Quarter Bundles to list in the shop.
I am feeling the season finally and hoping for a warm fire soon!

So this was going to maybe be my Christmas Card, but then I realized I was out of photo ink and They're all going to be late. Originally I wanted to have the lights around my children, but they are little monsters and no one would cooperate with mom (that would be me), because you know, she's crazy!
I think this is the first time EVER that I missed sending out my Christmas cards and I feel a little bad. I think I will have to do a New years card.

I saw this little Quiz and thought I'd give it a go.
If you do it leave me your link because I think these things are fun and it's nice to have fun and make friends.

1. Egg nog or hot chocolate? Um, neither? I LOVE LOVE coffee. And this time of year Starbucks has a Creme Brulee late...goodness and I have only been twice the whole season. what have I been thinking!?

2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree?

Santa leaves the presents unwrapped and all put together. This served two purposes:

1} my kids are really smart and I knew eventually the wrapping paper would be the death of me

2} the kids don't have to wait to play with their gifts until mom or dad put it together. At least one would be ready to go!! I think this year I am off the hook finally with putting together something.

3. Colored lights on tree/house or white?

white. The past couple of years we switched and have used the lights in that picture up there ;)

4. Do you hang mistletoe?

no, but can I get mistletoe? I think it would be way romantic to have it hanging up somewhere in the house

5. When do you put your decorations up?

not until the week after Thanksgiving. I like giving Thanksgiving it's own space. why rush to next holiday when you've got that one right there to enjoy!?

6. What is your favorite holiday dish?

I like to make fresh cinnamon rolls or a french toast casserole on Christmas morning. That is my favorite thing I will eat the whole day.

7. Favorite holiday memory as a child?

wow, that is a tough one. There are lots of bits that pop into my head when I read that. Santa once called me and came a week early just for me. That was pretty cool. Also I have 3 brothers. when we all started to get old enough we would stay up late into the night playing liars dice as a family. Oh and I love that we always were aloud to pick out one present to open on Christmas eve.

8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?

This was a big memory of mine. I actually already told you all about it here.

The kids are a big part of decorating the tree now. They do it mostly. We have a few sets of white doves and bells and wooden trees that are all over the tree and then we have the various years of crafty ornaments the kids have made or a couple special ones that were given to us.

11. Snow! Love it or dread it?

I think snow on Christmas is awesome.

12. Can you ice skate?

totally. But I don't remember the last time I did!

13. Do you remember your favorite gift?

no, but I did have my very first baby three days after Christmas. I love him the most.

14. What’s the most important thing about the holidays for you?

Family. Teaching my kids that that is what matters the most. That we have each other.

15. What is your favorite holiday dessert?

Can I say coffee again? chocolate covered pretzels are pretty rock star too.

16. What is your favorite holiday tradition?

I love that we go to my Moms on Christmas Eve. The kids are getting that part of MY Christmas by opening a gift with my mom like I did! It also feels like we get to have two days of celebrating.

My most favorite part of Christmas though is definitely after the kids go to bed. The hubs and I work as a team to make Christmas happen for them. It always feels so good. I always feel so thankful. I always feel so lucky to be married to him and have him by my side on Christmas eve.

17. What tops your tree?

a white metal star that has white chandelier gems through it that sparkle in the light.

18. Which do you prefer: giving or receiving? Can I be honest and say both? Both feel nice right!?

19. Candy canes: yuck or yummy?

Meh. A jar full of them are a happy sight but I probably won't eat them.

20. Favorite Christmas show?

The kids shows at school and stuff are my favorite.

21. Saddest Christmas song?

A sad Christmas song? those shouldn't be aloud. But there is one about a little boy buying a present for his sick mom that makes me want to cry.

Silent night is such a pretty song.

one of our Traditions around here is to pull out the Christmas boxes the week AFTER Thanksgiving.
I like to let the whole weekend pass, so that Thanksgiving gets its own holiday time ;)
And, we read 'twas the night before Christmas pretty much every night between then and Christmas.
The kids love it, every year.

This year, I have not been able to find our book anywhere!
It has been driving me quite mad so I think I will have to get a new one.
It would be lovely if I could find one with phenomenal art work since we read it every year!
This video has been subbing for us.
Not as romantic as the book, but this one is pretty charming.

I am so excited to be posting here about what inspires me to play!

That's what I want my life to be like. I want others to instantly get happy when they see me.

Sadly, I'm human and that doesn't always happen. I'm not always cheerful and giggly.

Those are times when I seek...

My incredibly funny husband. Seriously, he is the funniest and goofiest man I know. He is continuously making me laugh and smile. Even when he makes me angry, I end up smiling.

My silly sister. She is beautiful & smart & kind. She isn't afraid to make a fool of herself to provide laughs for someone else.

My little, little sister. I can not even explain how hysterical this one is. She has me laughing a good portion of the time I'm around her, the other portion is spent telling her to be good. But that's besides the point!

I mean look at them! What's not to laugh? Or be encouraged to play?

When life gets too intense, I turn to these three.

They usually know exactly how to take some seriousness out of my day.

Just because we are adults now, doesn't mean we can't seek some kiddos and play until our hearts burst with giggles & smiles!

So go ahead. Find a child (of course one you know & you have informed the parents!) & let go of all your worries. Play dress up. Or Tonka trucks. Or go to the playground.

Do something. Anything.

Just as long as you end up laughing until your side hurts.

That's what it means to play.

She was seven.

A petite, howly girl living in Hawaii.

The kids were making fun of her; but they made fun of her often.

They said there was no such thing as Santa Claus.

It weighed heavy on her little heart the entire day.

There was nothing more magical than him.

Were they just being mean, or could it be true?

She walked home so very sad, but determined.

Her mom would never lie to her.

She told her mom that she was old enough now.

She told her mom that she could handle it.

She could handle just about anything.

She just wanted to know the TRUTH.

So, her mom told her.

The truth, it CRUSHED HER.

Not because she thought the presents would stop.

Not because she had been lied to.

Not because of any real reason other than she has just lost that magic.

That feeling she had gotten every Christmas of her life when she thought there was a jolly old man and a team of reindeer flying overhead. She had heard them more than once right?

She thought she had maybe even seen them.

How could it all have been not true?

I think about how that sweet seven year old girl couldn't just accept it.

There HAD BEEN MAGIC.

The magic had always been there.

The magic of Christmas was true.

She had to believe in the magic.

She decided what she had to keep believing in was the magic.

The magic of Christmas.

It was the magic of the stars kissing your face and warming your heart.

I bet you think I never told my kids there is such thing as Santa.

If I tell you I did, will you think I was mean to give them that same disappointment?

To lie to them, when this memory of me at seven is such a strong one.

Silly, to think this was a major decision in their upbringing.

It was. But I decided in the end it was worth it.

Those years I believed in Santa created the magic.

It's the magic I STILL feel every Christmas eve when the hubs and I ARE SANTA.

It's the warm feeling that anything is possible if you just believe.

I tell myself there maybe once was a Santa.

That I am helping to carry out his spirit.

He's not a commercial thing that so many make him out to be to me.

He's magic.

And if I can give them that same belief.

That anything is possible if you just believe.

Then, maybe those minutes of disappointment would not matter so much.

This letter was written in 1897.

Dr. Philip O'Hanlon, a coroner's assistant on Manhattan's Upper West Side, was asked by his then eight-year-old daughter, Virginia, whether Santa Claus really existed.

O'Hanlon suggested she write to The Sun, a prominent New York City newspaper at the time, assuring her that

He unwittingly gave one of the paper's editors, Francis Pharcellus Church, an opportunity to rise above the simple question and address the philosophical issues behind it.

This is a true story.

those were my EXACT words on Saturday night.

I was feeling very spoiled.

What a great reward for all the hard work put in this year.

Saturday night we went to an amazing Christmas party for the hubs work.
It was so fabulous!!! See that? This was the INSIDE of the center of the hotel.
Amaze balls.
It feels like I went to an oxygen bar and got some air.
{no I have never actually gone to get air, but what I am saying is I feel refreshed today and like I got some "fresh air"}
This weekend consisted of no work.
Time alone with the hubs and a fabulous night in a gorgeous hotel and dancing on the top floor with a bunch of very nice people I didn't really know ;)
It really was a treat.
I am totally in the holiday frame of mind now too.
Finally! and a big PHEW for my kids....who I am sure were starting to get nervous.
GAME ON!

We did snap some pics on my cell phone...so you can see our fancy pants.
They are not great but you can get the idea!

Play.

The word play seems to be open to interpretation. It means one thing when we are children. It means riding our bikes, playing chase, creating make-believe worlds and confidently living in them whether it's by ourselves, or with our friends. It's playing tea parties, and cars & trucks. When playing is part of life, completely OK in our day to day lives. In fact it's encouraged. Parent's tell their kids to "go outside & play", or "go play in your room", we even make play rooms for our children.

Then something happens.

We grow up. We become adults, we begin to become more work and less play. Playing becomes childish. Our form of play changes. We no longer frolic around in silly costumes, or submerge ourselves into make-believe worlds. Our curiosity no longer wanders when we explore the world and our thoughts never lead to, "what magical creatures might live there that only we can see." As adults we become more serious. We stress about the day to day "to-dos" and what bills are due this month. That becomes our focus.
We become overwhelmed by it.

I live in Colorado with my fabulous husband, Ryan, and our two dogs - Wyatt & Rudy, and our three cats. I have a passion for love, my faith, art, creating, business, and people. I adore my evenings with my husband, snuggled up on my couch. The random moments when my dogs come up to me and bark, then scamper off to find their favorite toys, make me feel gitty and my heart happy. My heart desires children, but that is on God's time, however the sound of children laughing makes me smile without a second thought, and I know the moment I hear my own laughing and playing - my heart will melt.

What inspires me to play?

I believe life can only be taken so seriously, for so much time at once.

Serious is good. Serious is important.

Too much serious is sometimes...toxic.

Our hearts become hardened, our minds become more narrow.

We decide the world needs explanations, and less wonder.

Sad isn't it?

I'm lucky, although sometimes there is less imagination in my world that once before, it's still there. My mind wanders, sometimes I may write a book about some far away land, I don't know. Sometimes I paint things that are more imaginative, other times realistic. That's life though I think.

But when I need to be inspired, when I need to play,

What inspires that?

My Husband.

The seasons.

Fall leaves dancing across the earth.

Music.

Our fur-children.

The winter snow.

Children.

Silly moments, when it's way past sleeping, those moments when the world is so funny.

Art, playing with new media, playing with new designs.

raising girls might very well be the death of me.
They can scratch out your eyeballs and stand in front of a bus for you all in one breath.
We're strange creatures aren't we?

The thing about girls is they can be so plain awful.
They can be simply amazing.

For example, I am sort of a black sheep in my neighborhood.
The ladies like to talk. So with the term ladies, I suppose I am being generous.
Yes, that is the kind of neighborhood I live in.
I don't like to join in all their reindeer games.
Why?
rumor has it I think I am too good for them.
truth is I want to be good to them.
If they are going to stand there and pretend to be my friend and then turn around and tell someone else all about me. It won't be good. I won't be good. I'll spoil the whole game.
Maybe I am just not built for it.
I don't like to make assumptions about people.
I can't keep quiet in the mean girl games. I'll call them out on it.
There is no way of knowing what kind of life or experiences a person has had.
This is the plain awful I meant.
This time of year that makes me think about it more.
I turn down most of the party invites.
I guess that makes me awful.

Then there is the amazing.
True girl support.
encouragement.
Understanding.
There is no one who will "get it" all more than another woman.
A true friend is like a superpower.
really.
This past year I have found so much of that.
It's breathtaking.

So back to my girls, who might kill me.
I want them to be the amazing.
I will try with all my heart and soul to keep them from being the awful.
Even if it kills me.

4. she will cry if you tell her something nice
5. she can be a badaz if she needs to.
6. she was the one and only parent there for most of my life.

9. She believes in mermaids and fairies and other cool things

Hi, Aubrey Plays readers! I’m Tricia and I blog at Mama Marchand’s Musings. I just opened my Etsy shop, Mama’s Nest Designs, in October and I just joined Aubrey on the writing staff of RevolutionizeHer, a blog about inspiring women who are self-employed.

When Aubrey asked me to guest post about what I do when life get too serious, I laughed out loud because that’s been my life lately! This fall season has been chaotic and stressful, to put it lightly, and I’ve been trying to focus on how to let loose, have fun, and play!

Playing is rather easy to do in our little house because it’s slowly being taken over by our 20 month old daughter’s toy collection. That photo is just a small glimpse into what our living room usually looks like. N loves to color now and she’s quite obsessed with sticker so I find myself coloring in princess dresses or flowers in her latest Disney coloring book or being the canvas for her sticker art.

She’s quite the funny little girl so her sense of humor, cheesy giggles, and the way she starts a tickle fest make me laugh at a moment’s notice. The girl LOVES to laugh and make you laugh, too! If we’re having a particularly serious or {let’s be honest} boring day at home, we get out of the house. We’ll go to a park & run around like crazy people or go to the mall and ooh & ahh at the “foo foos” {her word for dogs} at the pet store.

I’m just now getting the courage to try messy crafts with her so over Thanksgiving weekend, we made salt dough handprint ornaments and it was a blast! I found the tutorial at Nest of Posies – click here to check it out! I think we’ll try homemade play-dough next.
The very best thing to cure my serious is my daughter. We have a blast with her and she keeps us playful!

Five Tips on Making Your Business Stand Out

Hi there! I'm Ashley from After Nine To Five. I've gone to some great lengths to set myself a part from others throughout my entire life, but especially when it comes to my business. Today I wanted to share with you some tips on making your business stand out in the crowd.

1. Customer Service

Bad customer service is a guaranteed way to send your customers searching elsewhere for the product they purchased from you. Even if it's a one-of-a-kind unique product, they'll settle for something else if it means no having to deal with poor customer service again. On top of that, they'll most likely pass the word on that they had a bad experience with your business. On the other hand, great customer service is likely to do the opposite. You'll get repeat customers and fabulous reviews. Going above and beyond for someone when something goes wrong with an order or for an item goes a long way.

2. Packaging

Whether or not the package is a gift for them or themselves, whoever is opening it wants to feel like they are opening a present. Don't just throw your product in a manilla envelope and expect them to be wowed. It just won't happen. Use a box, or a bag, or something to dress up the product a bit. It doesn't have to be super expensive or time intensive. Just show the customer you care by adding a couple of special touches to their shipment.

3. Unique Products

There is no better way to make your business stand out than by offering someone can't get in fifty other stores. You may specialize in something that's pretty common, but figure out a way to make it unique. Add something to it, combine it with something it's usually not with, change up the design, etc. The more you can differentiate your products the better.

4. Give Them A Reason to Return

Customers are hoping they have a reason to return to your business when they go in. If they get excellent service, a quality product, and feel like they're your number one focus throughout the whole process, they'll most likely be back, especially if you give them an extra reason to. Maybe it's a discount, a new product you have coming to the business, a free gift - whatever it is, it's worth it. Repeat customers are much easier to maintain than trying to constantly find new customers

5. Meet multiple needs

Can your business meet the needs of many? A business that can meet the needs of various kinds of people is crucial for success. When people can shop for multiple reasons at one store, they are much likely to make a purchase there even if it costs a bit more due to the convenience factor. You are also less likely to experience as much slow/down time when you can serve multiple needs. When one product isn't selling as well, another may be flying off the shelves.

I sometimes slightly snort when I laugh.

I can smell EVERYTHING. Promise, it will freak you out.
I hate when I blow a light bulb as I turn on the switch.

I love the smell of laundry but I hate doing it.
Two of my kids are practically teenagers and I still am super picky about who I leave them with.
One of my eyebrows is turning white.
I love almonds and eat them almost every day.
I carry chap stick with me at all times.

I love to lay on my belly with my feet up in the air.
My sons friends say I cook like an old Asian lady.

what you need :
* 1 spaghetti squash [i used one 3-4 pound squash for TWO of us] [our local co-op sells them for $1.29/pound]
* your choice of pasta/marinara/tomato sauce
* your choice of garlic, onion, spices [we use garlic salt!]
* any other toppings you want [veg cheese - we use daiya, mushrooms, tomatoes]

how to do it :
* preheat your oven to *400
* cut your squash in half LENGTH WISE
* take a spoon and scrape out the guts ; NOT the flesh, the guts [the stringy parts with the seeds]
[you can save the seeds to roast!]
* put the halves cut side down [so the shell is looking at you!] on a cookie sheet and put in the oven for 45-60 minutes.
* while your squash is baking, mix together your tomato sauce, spices, veggies, ect.
* once your squash is ready, take it out and scrape out all of the flesh [get as close to the shell as you can] ; mix the squash [looks like spaghetti, right?] with your sauce-mixture ; divide it in half and put it back in the shell.

thats it!
we like to eat this with some toasted french bread with vegan butter [we use earth balance!]
i would love your feedback ; this is a great fall meal. squash is SO healthy, available and affordable this time of year.

my new favorite lipstick. just because

is it because I can't get my self timer to take a picture of my new favorite ear rings?
well, maybe.
BUT, I have never done a post about lipstick so the fact that I am is saying something.
I have a love hate relationship with lipstick.
I love big pouty lips.
But I really hate the way most lipsticks feel.
sticky.
dry.
glue (as in um, hi, you have lipstick on your teeth..)
Plus, I am a mom so I ~~yell~~ talk a lot which means it's gone as soon as you apply it.
enter JUST bitten.
Yeah, so what if I bought it just because of the name.
I liked it's vamperish vibe.
Total score, because I really love it.

So here's the thing. It is a LIPSTAIN on one end, and a lip balm on the other.
SO, it feels just like you smeared on some blistex. awesome.
And it lasts. like stays put a long part of my day.
I think I need one in every color they offer.
Do you hear that REVLON?? I do reviews. ;)

Hi! I'm Joanna, from ModaMama, a blog where I write about life, love, acting, tv hosting, and fashion. Mostly fashion though; I love clothes! I'm so happy to be here guest posting today. It's lovely to meet all you wonderful folks!

My life is filled with three lovely and messy little critters: my baby girl, my Husband, and my little Drake.

When writing this post I was intrigued by the question of what I do when life becomes too serious. I had never really stopped to think about it. There's a few things I do, I guess. Chocolate! Chocolate is such a must. Every woman must always have chocolate in the house for rough days. I run too. I love to run and just go, go, GO! Then there's jigsaw puzzles. I'm seriously obsessed. I think I have a freak kind of spatial awareness because I can do them really fast - freakish fast. And I do jigsaws online because with a babe, dog, and husband who are all equally messy, there's just no place for me to do a big jigsaw!

But my heart and soul really play when I act. I love acting and I do it as much as I can! I host Tv and though that's fun, it doesn't fulfill me the way that playing a character does. If you want to see some stuff, check out my acting site to see what I'm up to. That's where my heart rests.

But you don't get to do it everyday, since it's really a freelance, touch and go kind of work. So daily, I get my play and joy elsewhere...

In fashion! Fashion is where I get to play everyday. Creating outfits, dreaming up what to wear with what, or even just trying to figure out how I feel that day and dressing to reflect that. It's like a grown up version of playing dress-up. The best thing is that you get to do it everyday!

I am sort of glad you can't see me right now because I am smiling so big- you might think I'm "special."

There is so much to be excited about. I just might explode.

It has been
{1}one year
One year, since I clicked those clicks and held my breath and opened up my little Etsy shop.
I was nervous and unsure. I was uncertain. I wanted to prove myself. I wanted more than anything to be authentic and true to who I am. I mostly wanted it to be in a spirit of play.
AND I WANTED TO SUCCEED.
I remember my first sale. It was midnight and the moon was full. My hubs was out on the deck and I went out there and danced like a crazy woman. {I am glad it was midnight}
I remember that very first scary email I sent to a amazing blogger to see if she'd be interesting in reviewing my products.
I felt so silly and nervous. She was so kind to me. see it here
Lots has happened since a year ago.
I am not such a baby anymore.
Obviously, I am still learning.
But this year has been an amazing journey for me.
I am so excited about what's on the horizon!!
I am celebrating.
And this month there is lots and lots for you.

He was born on a Monday.
To a girl about to turn 24, who had no idea
how he'd change her.
COMPLETELY.
He was born three weeks early, with dark curly hair, that turned blonde within a matter of months.
He had the most magical blue eyes and the most amazing laugh she'll ever see or hear.
She shook inside for the longest time for fear she'd mess up.
He was her first baby.
That precious baby boy of hers.
He NEVER cried.
Really, he never did.
When he was first talking, he called her aubrey instead of mom and that made her a little sad.

When he was 5. It was the first time she ever left him.
She cried sore, hard tears as she waited at the top of the hill-
and watched that kindergarten class march off.
It broke her heart, and she prayed all day long that it would be a perfect day for him.

When he was 10, she could see a change in him.
He was growing up. He made her feel so proud.
But he still let her snuggle with him at night.
That was when he talked to her. Told her everything.
He loved his mama.
She knew that, without a doubt.
They spent a week in the hospital. They said it was asthma.
She didn't sleep for 4 nights straight in that hospital room.
She loves that boy more than she could ever describe.

He has the most amazing birthmark.
When kids make fun of him,
she thinks she should eat them up.
She tells him that someday he'll find a girl who thinks it's amazing too.

She is not ready for this.
He will become a teen by the end of this year.
This year, her son will become a teenager.
This year is almost over. It will happen soon.
She buys him shoes and jeans from the men's section now.
She can hardly even believe it.

He doesn't get a lot of talk on this little part of her world
because he is shy, and likes his privacy like his dad.
He's also still quiet,
so she spends her time dealing with the dramas of his baby sisters.

She started wearing his sweatshirt.
When he's gone, a lot of times she puts it on.
It smells like him. She feels like maybe it will keep him close for just a little bit longer. Maybe it will make her realize just how big he is. Her little boy.
He asks her with a sheepish grin if she's wearing his sweatshirt.
He doesn't ask why.
Maybe he knows that his mama still needs him a little,
and with all her soul hopes he still needs her more than a little too.

Remember that time at Band Camp I asked you about fabrics???
Okay, I lied. We weren't at Band Camp. We weren't even face to face.
BUT, there was a reason for my inquiries....
Remember how I told you I was a artist?? Well, I have missed it.
I have been humming and hawing and trying to figure out how I can incorporate what I am doing right now with aubreyplays AND my art.
SO, I have been a little elf behind the scenes.....
My mom always told me about putting down my bag of shoulds.
So, in honor of her and that thought.
My VERY first fabric will be used for an actual and adorable
"bag of shoulds"

I'm only giving you the sneak here.

and you can't tell but it's plum on a canvas fabric that's barely grey.

Friday, like Ru Paul

Yeah, you read that right.
I totally googled, youtube'd trying to find a video this morning and couldn't.
Maybe that was a sign. Ru Paul first thing Friday morning might not work for some of you?
I never told you-
but Friday's I think of as "pump you up Fridays" and even if I don't post it I think of a theme song.
I have been playing catch up this morning and downed enough caffeine to sing
"you've got to work" more than once. SO that was where I was going with that.

SO, exciting fake events here.
They told me the post office had been bombed as I was heading out to it.
Turns out it was just a light bulb exploding, um in their OWN ceiling. It happens.
Word.
gossip much?
Thank goodness it was nothing!
Those journals up there went out this week, and so did this set of custom "family" cozies.
I love the natural look they have.

and in the category of exciting happenings here that are REAL:
I think I have figured out a way to incorporate some of my art into aubreyplays.
Be more authentic to myself.
This made Photoshop be in the house again....wahooo! oh how I have missed it so.
I am having fun with it and my art....and am expecting some fabric next week (wink).

pretty. ehe?

This picture COULD pretty much sum up my day yesterday.

BUT, I am not going to let it.

I have too much to feel glad for.

A shift in my attitude recently has seriously changed me.

Truth. In the past something like this could have ruined my whole day.

I would have been frustrated. I would have been mad.

Mad I didn't get done what was on my list for the day.

Mad I had "wasted" three hours sitting on the side of the road.

remember when I drew this last month?

It is so true.

This blow out could have been much worse.

I could have lost control or gotten hurt on the side of the highway.

I could have been alone.

But the trip was to take care of something good.

The trip was a lunch date of sorts with my guy and the Bean.

We had been having a really nice day.

We got off to the side fine.

Yes, when he went to change the tire the lug nut was stripped and there was no way of changing the tire.

But his smart mom had given us AAA for his birthday.

As I watched him get frustrated I felt oddly at peace.

It was fine.

Our snow was gone, and though I was on the side of the highway I had walked down into a grassy field with my Bean.

It was really a gorgeous day to be outside.

She looked so pretty playing in the grass.

I was being forced to JUST STOP.

Something I just don't do often enough.

I could see my husband feeling so very STRESSED and he needed to get back to work.

I saw me in the past.

I wished him peace quietly. There was nothing he could do about the situation.

I told him I was glad he was with me.

The first tow truck couldn't tow us. There had been a lack of communication. It was our back tire.

No one could get it off.

The bean and I raced each other. Laughing and being silly on the side of the road.

I ripped my tights.

Like magic, I didn't even care.

I was happy for all that I have.

When we finally decided to call a friend to come get us, he pulled up and asked if I was having a good day?

He meant to be sarcastic.

But right then I realized that YES, actually I was.

Maybe it didn't go as planned and I might be playing catch up today-

but the way I looked at it was it wasn't a bad day.

Life is an adventure.

Know what I mean?

What are you grateful for?

Okay, so for the next few minutes I want you to put down that bag of shoulds.

inspiration for a new "bag of shoulds" EEEK! and the fabric?? It's hand drawn fabric by me!!

You might hear my jumping jacks when that box of fabric arrives on my door step!

Lately I have been on a major upswing.

Maybe it’s the grey hairs that are popping out. Or maybe it’s something to do with my age.

I am so mature.

The laughter coming out of me right now proves I don’t really believe that.

And I often wonder why I ever thought I should be the one in charge.

But I guess what I mean is maybe it’s the years I have logged.

And as I type this I am betting it has nothing to do with any of that and it is the excersize….

Random thought to you, but aha moment for me. So here we go:

Have you ever noticed that SOMETIMES when you take charge of the simplest of things that are bothering you in life-

(like replacing that cardboard box with a REAL ~~cute~~ trash can)

That somehow you feel stronger? More in charge?

EMPOWERED.

YES, that’s what it is I guess.

The cool thing about that empowerment is, if you listen to it and let it linger, it lets you empower yourself to not let the little things bother you so much.

It lets you decide that you don’t always have to follow “the rules”

I mean, who says you can’t wear white after labor day and you can only work out in the morning and you can’t eat peanut butter after midnight

(well, maybe I am the one who says the last one, um hiccups?)

But Why SHOULD you have to follow someone else’s path, rules, way of thinking? BORE-ING.

Who says that you can’t have your cake and eat it to? I mean, what an absurd thing to say.

If there is a cake worth eating in front of me I’m going to at least take a bite.

At this point, if you’re still here after all that mumbo jumbo you may be wondering where I am going with this.

And I am going to tell you the truth right now.

I don’t know.

But I do know that with these recent feelings of empowerment comes an amazing friend back into my life.

ME.

AND she (me) reminds me that I don't have to play by all the rules.

I am tired of questioning my own train of thought.

My kid will be just as smart as yours if I do not put her in preschool.

I’m actually betting on smarter.

I don’t feel like I always need to explain myself.

I always wear white after labor day.

AND I am going to play by my own rules in this blog land.

Yeah, Now I know-

this is where this post was heading all along.

I have felt up until recently that my blog was silly and not really good enough for those "BIG TIME" bloggers. I actually never even really told people about it.

I had all these shoulds in my head. But they were "rules" from these other bloggers. Not mine.

If I told you the truth right now of my analogy of my recent experience in blog land I might be misunderstood and I’d probably offend.

SO I will leave it at this.

Lately I feel pestered by some of the blogs I had been following.

The “do you want to sponsor me??”

The giveaways that just seem like a political campaign AND for the blogger not the giver.

The feeling like they just always want something from me.

Um, No.

That is not why I was reading them. That is not why I am doing this.

I decided to clean house this weekend. Some of you bloggers just didn’t make the cut. Sorry.

Blog for you. Blog to show me you. Not who you think I want to see.

Blog from your heart. Blog for a purpose other than being the prom queen.

AND Blog by your own rules.

I was never that popular ~~blogger~~ in highschool. But I was REAL, and that is enough for me.

I hope that you decide to change something little,

a small simple thing that’s been bugging you in your life.

DO it this week.

I hope that after that, you feel a little tingle of empowerment.

I hope that then you feel like you can play by your own rules.

I hope it makes you feel like your path is just as nice as theirs.

And lets the real you shine.

You know those days?
the ones where nothing really goes quite as planned.
Not because you are having a bad day.
But everyone around you is.
And they NEED you.
And somehow, you are given the energy and strength to handle it all at once.
These are the days that I thank god that he made me a mom. A wife.
The person that I am.
These are the days that I am thankful for the life I have-
where I can put everything else on hold and just be there.
Thankful that my little shop is doing what it needs to-
so I am not gone. Out there at a part time job.
I am exactly where I need to be.
Because once in a while on a day like today...even though it's brutal,
I can pull through for my peeps.
And make them feel better.
I can listen.
And give hugs.
I can encourage and reassure.
I can once in a while, make everything okay.
Do you ever have days like that?
When you think. Yeah, I guess I am cut out for this job...
and at the end of this day.....I don't think anything could be more appropriate ;)

the {awesome} trash can

Let me start this post with a total disclaimer:
I aubrey may or may not be the ONLY one totally excited about this trash can.
I aubrey may or may not have given my little posse yet another excuse to call me a dork.
But I am totally excited about it anyway.

Okay so the story of this trash can all began when I set out on a quest recently to give my studio a little more credit.
To admit that it has earned it's right to be a true studio.
To organize it to be a happy and more organized work apace.
To stop making it feel like it's just visiting my dining room.
As with many of my recent journeys I go to pinning and have a board I call "for the studio please ;)"
Last week I found this.
I read her whole post. Brilliant.

Let me show you what until now, I have been using.

that, my friends is a sad state of affairs.

My poor studio.

SO can you imagine the little happy steps I took as I marched out of Lowes carrying this!???

I was so excited I should be embarrassed.

But I am not.

And no one in my house understood.

Well, maybe my son did a little since he takes out the kitchen trash.

He said he thought that a trash can like this in the kitchen would mean he could take the trash out less.

Yes. He's a smart one.

Yes.

It was a windy day and I got paint in my hair.

But paint in my hair makes my soul happy.

Seriously. I had no idea that painting a trash can would make me so very happy.

1. it is deliciously retro feeling.

2. it is a giant bin to throw my scraps in.

3. I get to make a very pretty "trash scrunchy" for it

4. It happily reminds me of Oscar the grouch. I sort of love his brutal honesty.

5. Did I mention I am getting a really pretty trash can out of the deal?

Isn't she beautiful!?

I used regular cotton fabric for the "trash scrunchy" which has elastic in it to hold the trash bag in place.

BRILLIANT!

This will be fine since this trash only sees fabric and paper and yarn. Nothing gross.

If I do make one for the kitchen I will use a laminated cotton or an oil cloth so I can wipe it clean when it's needed.

Yep. Brilliant.

I also think using these as laundry bins would be fun. Instead of a trash bag, muslin or canvas linings could be used....and the colors could match your laundry room!

A quick INTRO:

My name is aubrey and I am a mamma to three little monsters who mean the world to me.

I also have a little shop called aubrey plays.

I think with a little GIRL POWER, anything is possible.

I am a genuine girl that admits mostly to being a dork.

A girl that people sometimes mistake for being a little air headed.

I am married to my high school sweet heart.

(yep, we proved everyone wrong)

I love the smell of laundry.

I feel the most alive when I paint.

I wish I was Wonder woman. But that’s mostly because of her awesome red boots.

I make functional and cheeky things that wink at you.

I will tell you good moods are contagious and just might ask you to catch one with me and to JUST PLAY.

THE COSTUME:

At the end of summer, my bean watched the movie Racing Stripes.

She instantly fell in love with a whole new animal. the ZEBRA.

She has made me find every kids national geographic type of video or worksheet for her to study over.

You can read more how she feels about zebras here.

It really wasn't that big of a surprise when she told me that is what she wanted to be this Halloween.

And it is super cute and was super easy.

The cool part about this idea is once we are done with this costume, we can remove all the extras and she has a hoodie for the rest of winter too.

gather your supplies:

*Fleece zebra hoodie (I got mine at Kohls for $4)

*black yarn- for mane and tail.

*embroidery floss to attach ears and tail to hoodie

*2 pieces of cardboard, a square of white felt and pink paint for ears

(I actually used 2 laminate counter samples I had from lowes)

so just trace around your squares of card board right onto your felt-

then round one side as you cut them out. (cut 4)

Paint the inside of your zebras ears with pink paint on 2 of the ear pieces.

Once dry, stitch one plain and one painted ear together.

If you don't want to sew, use hot glue or fabric glue.

slide your cardboard piece into the ear to keep the ears from being floppy.

Zebras don't have floppy ears ;)

Just quick stitch the ears to the top of the hoodie with embroidery floss.

next I made the tail.

loosely wrap your black yarn around a book several times.

You want it to be thick enough to have 3 decent sections of "hair" to braid.

Take a small piece of yarn and thread it through all of the loops on one end of the book and tie them all together tightly.

Use scissors to cut through all the loops on the other end of the book.

You should now have a "pony tail."

Lay it on a table or your legs and separate into 3 sections and braid.

Take another piece of yarn to tie the end of the tail tightly.

Trim the bottom even.

You can stitch the tail to the back bottom of your hoodie or just use a safety pin.

okay, so last I added the mane.

This was the trickiest part probably because I just used the biggest needle I had and it was hard to thread the yarn through. So I tried to keep the yarn on the needle and use from the bottom so I didn't have to keep re-threading it!

I had to separate the sections of yarn and only use 1 ply at a time.

A bigger needle probably would have made this part easier ;)

Starting at the front of the hood pull yarn through and tie at the top leaving 2 about equal sides.

I left about 1/4 inch between pieces. But there aren't any rules. I didn't trim it all even because I liked the way the mane looked sort of matted and wild. You could trim it up even or make it more short and spikey. What ever you think is perfect for your little zebra.

I picture mine running through the wild a little unkempt.

I wish you could have heard the "woop, wooping"

{zebra noises} my little bean yelled. she couldn't wait to get this "adorable zebra" on.

she's sort of a minimalist and wouldn't let me paint a nose or anything on her face.

Maybe on Halloween?

for pants?

we got lucky and a thoughtful friend of mine sent her some zebra leggings with a adorable outfit.

Could that be more perfect for her costume?

I think a solid black pair would work just fine though too.

Lots of zebras have solid black leg bottoms.

I love Halloween.

And I really, really love that she let me make her costume this year.

Those days for my two older monsters are long gone.

It's too easy to just go to the store and pick out a costume.

Where is the creativity in that?

I love using your imagination on Halloween too.

So fun.

I am going to say it right now.
I do not believe in scales.
I do not believe in diets.
The minute you tell me I can not eat something, I will probably figure out a reason why I can.
I do believe in feeling good.
I do believe in outrunning the bad guys.
I do believe in feeling strong.

Lately, I know that I need to get on it.
The exercise thing.
I need to feel better..
I want to be stronger.
I can see the bad guys off in the distance, and there is no way I'm going to catch them.
I haven't been "to the gym" in over a year.

I can sit here and tell you all the reasons why.
I am not a morning person, I am too busy, the kids won't let me, the stereo isn't working, I need a new sports bra, the dog ate my homework.
I don't want to.
Let's be real honest. That is the real reason-
because if you REALLY want something. You make it happen.

I was looking through a woman's magazine recently and it said even if you don't do that hour, even if you don't do all the {body parts} routines. Even if all you can do is 5 minutes. Do it. Wow. I know that sounds simple. But you know the drill. There's not enough time to do that thing you planned on starting.
SO YOU DON'T DO ANYTHING.
It's been lingering in my mind. Like a song stuck in my head.
1 mile.
aubrey, you can do 30 minutes or 1 mile. Whichever comes first. {that voice in my head says}
you CAN do that.
aubrey, mornings obviously do not work for you. figure it out.
Tonight I told the hubs.
Every night at 8pm I am going to go down to that basement and run.
Maybe I will still get up in the mornings. But 8:00. That is going to happen.

Tonight I hopped on the elliptical and cranked up the music.
I closed my eyes and I ran.
When I opened my eyes I had ran 3 minutes.
Then, that little voice started.
you want to be down here all night? the sooner you get to 1 mile, the sooner we can be done with this. RUN.
So I ran. I ran like I was chasing the bad guys. I sang and I ran until I could not physically sing anymore. And I kept running.
1 mile, 10 minutes.
Really, aubrey? you're going to quit? that only took you 10 minutes. Keep going. See if you can make it to 2 miles. You can quit when you hit 2.
16 minutes in and I could feel the rubber legs starting.
Run backwards. just run. The sooner you hit 2, the sooner you can quit.
That last minute I closed my eyes again and told myself to keep running.
And guess what?
2 miles, 22 minutes.
That's no world record but I'll take it.
Is it bad that that voice in my head now wants to know how long it SHOULD take me to run 1 mile?
Maybe someday I'll do it that fast.
So who's going to "meet me at the gym" every night at 8:00??
1 mile or 30 minutes, whichever comes first.
First one back upstairs wins. ;)

I make prom dresses for kitties

well, actually I didn't know I did. Until I did.

Until someone sent me their fabulous prom dress and asked me really nicely to.
So it was the kitty I made, not the prom dress.
And because I have a toddler I now take prom dress kitties outside to push on a swing.

If I didn't have a four year old I suppose that would be a weird thing to do...unless it just made a great shot.

And then prom dress kitties out on a swing would make perfect sense.

right?

Sometimes the house full of three kids and a dog is so insane and I feel like I surely will be quite mad by the next day. I say save me. Out loud.
I will go mad surely.
Sometimes I am going about my tasks and wishing I were doing anything but the dishes again.
Sometimes, I feel as if I may just burst because I have so many ideas....
and so little time.
Sometimes, I think about that young bride who thought love conquers the world and being perfect was better than being Martha Stewart. That a spotless house said everything.
Sometimes I think I am doing it all wrong, like there really is no method to my madness.
Sometimes I ask myself, what if...
Wow, what if I had not had these three adorable babies?
That have taught me that there is no such thing as a selfish me anymore. not ever.
That have given me new ideas and new reasons daily.
That have made me happier than I even thought possible, and prouder too.
That have made me strong because sometimes you can't always be nice. You have to stick up for what's right, because if you don't..how will they know how to? Even if sometimes that means they hate me.
Sometimes they hate me.
Sometimes I have that moment.
When it all hits me.
I asked for this. And I got it.
I have everything I ever hoped for and more.
I will have more time someday.
A spotless house in a real life world is not even possible.
And love still does conquer most. But not all.
That the method is my method and the madness is my madness.
I should just own it and get over it.
That I honestly really and truly can't even imagine a life without these three babes.
Even as they enter not babe-ness.
And I can't hardly even remember life before this crazy house.
I guess sometimes it just takes a minute to think about it.
And they don't actually hate me.
well, maybe a little sometimes.

Tuesdays are much slower in the morning so it is an extra perk for me to start the week on a Tuesday.

the power of momentum

theMONSTERS: this is where aubrey plays was born last November.

Momentum. It really is a power.
I read it once somewhere-
of all the assets that a business can posses.
Momentum is the most important.
It's really true.

It goes in phases.
And I have come to realize that if you've got it you need to harness it.
Like a mad scientist, just absorb it, Listen to it, follow it, trust it.

But sometimes it's hard. You know if you have other people who need you.
Others who don't understand the power of momentum running through you NOW.

and then it's lost.

When that happens what do you do?
When you hear that voice in the back of your head saying "hey! wake up! WHERE'D you go?"
sometimes you need to just listen. (as hard as that can be in a busy household)

So, I wanted to make some notes for myself, for when I'm lost and I need to get my momentum back.

too bad it's not as easy as slipping in to a phone booth like Clark Kent and slipping that momentum super suit on.

(gee, I wonder what that suit would look like...it has to have a pair of cute boots I think)

okay focus girl. Here we go:

Ways to hold onto your momentum:

1. even if your busy busy with life. take notes, take pictures, keep a file on your computer to save ideas, to save that inspiration.

2. You are not going to feel that same spark from that inspiration later if you do not write down WHY it inspired you. WHAT were your first thoughts? take that minute to make a note of it.

3. Sometimes you are busy busy working on other peoples ideas and you loose sight of yours.

MAKE TIME TO WORK ON YOUR IDEAS TOO. SCHEDULE IT. MAKE IT IMPORTANT TOO.

4. this is a hard one, but I have found it is worth it almost every time. EVEN IF IT IS LATE, IF YOU ARE FEELING INSPIRED USE IT.

you may be tired in the morning. you can sleep when you're dead.

5. WALK AWAY.

if you feel frustrated. or burn out. Walk away for a day or two. This may mean the momentum is gone for now, but if you keep your mind open and listen It will come back to you.

6. Go back and look at where you first were coming from. Your first instinct may not always be EXACTLY right, but I'm betting it's somewhere in the vicinity of right ;)

This week I lost some momentum.

Yesterday I seized a spark and I'm glad.

ETSY KIDS: CHECK ME OUT!!!

I know I am probably the only one who feels a little excited about this.
And I just maybe be jumping up and down a little.
BUT, I did my nightly log onto etsy to check on my shop and I had like 50 likes of my Woodland Owl bag.
Hmm, what's up with that I wondered.
So I looked at my stats and it said traffic was coming from ETSY KIDS.
Hmm, again I am thinking, and thinking....WHAT IS ETSY KIDS....
it was driving me absolutely BATTY I tell ya.
Then out of the corner of my eye in the left top corner of Etsy's home page I see a list that says:
DISCOVER
FASHION
HOME & GARDEN
KIDS
HALLOWEEN
so I click kids and guess what I see!???

what!?

how absolutely cool is that!?

I don't know who put me there or exactly what it is, but it was really fun to see my bag up there!

Handmade, and why getting the bottom price deal is really rude.

This is a subject that has been weighing on my mind for a while now.
The audacity some people have when it comes to asking for a better deal.
If someone is making you something, by hand, putting their heart and soul into it and charging a fair price.
I don't know how else to put it, IT IS REALLY RUDE.
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate your business. I love that you love what I am putting out there.
But at some point don't you think you are kinda asking me to make you something for free?

To me, it's like saying to you, hey- you have time on your hands right? How about I pay for the detergent and you do all my laundry?

Let me explain how A LOT of handmade businesses work.
1}they are small. Like about as close to a lemonade stand as you can get.

2} because they are small, they buy supplies at the same rate you do. They do not yet, or may never have the buying power that a big corporation has. So they are paying for those quality supplies they are using.

3} A LOT of them are moms. Moms who are trying to make a little extra so that their kids can take the extras like dance class, or book fairs, or maybe even clothes.
What this means is they are using ANY free time they have to make these handmade items for you.
In my case, this also means I am giving up sleep.

4} by the time you add up the cost of supplies + the time it took to design a product + the time it took to make the actual product, they are really not making that much on your product.
This is because they are usually charging more than a fair price for that product, because they know that in a lot of cases you are in the same boat as they are.

5} if you are paying a LITTLE more than say Target or Walmart, you should.
this is because the product you are getting is like no other.
This is because you are getting something that someone made with care just for you.
This is because you are supporting HANDMADE.

ON DEALS:
yes we all have deals...
SO WHY CAN'T YOU ASK FOR A BETTER DEAL ON SOMETHING ELSE?
But there is usually a method to the madness.
1} because the shop is making items in bulk. This is more productive and because of that a deal can be given.
2} because the shop puts an item or two on sale. In my experience these items are items that are already made and have been sitting on the shelf for too long, or a better version of the item may be coming soon.
3} because the shop is trying to promote one particular item because they got a deal on the supplies for that item.
4} because the shop is working in collaboration with someone and has budgeted this as a advertising expense.
5} because it is RUDE.

So, I just have to say it.
If you ask me to make you a custom item and then you ask me for a better deal.
It really is insulting.
Maybe you have not even thought about it really, and never realized what you were asking for.
Maybe I smiled politely and made it happen for you because I'd like my shop to have a happy reputation.
I wish I could make it for less.
But If I am, then I am giving up the little time I have for you, just because you asked me to.
And I felt jipped the entire time I made it.
And I bet that's not what you intended.
SO I am just telling you the truth so you understand.
Because maybe you had no idea what you were asking for.
At least I hope not.

I have been trying to let myself be quiet and listen to where I am being guided.

It always comes back to this.

I am not sure where I am going with this just yet.

I may start building canvas's again...

I may start painting again.

I may just add art to my shop.

I just don't know yet.

I'm still listening.

It's my first video vlog and I am sure I will regret it the minute I hit publish....

But you are getting a peek at my studio.

You are totally benefiting from my mood today.

SO here goes:

It's a strange phenomenon I suffer from.
Every so often they pop into my head.
I am old enough now to know that they happen only once in a while.
I am wise enough to know exactly what they are and where they stem from.
The manamanahs.
They come from a rut, or frustration. BLAH.
They come to make me laugh instead of cry.
They come to entertain when I am feeling a little bored with the day.
They come from Jim Hensons head.
They come to make me think, that I just might be crazy.

Don't worry they go away as quick as they come and only last a day or two.

and guess what.

I found that Sandra Bullock video I spoke of!

I had no idea she was a phyciatrist!

now it makes perfect sense.
